For the fourth consecutive January, CIBC Professor of Entrepreneurship and eCommerce Karl Ulrich will teach his ground-breaking modular course, OPIM 654: Development of Web-based Products and Services, at Wharton | San Francisco. The intensive workshop format of the class creates not only a unique method of learning; it also presents an opportunity to bring together MBA Program for Executives students from both San Francisco and Philadelphia, as well as full-time MBA students and undergraduates. The course is scheduled on the academic calendar between MBA Exec weekends and during the university’s winter break so as to accommodate all students. Additional Global Modular Classes will also be taught in the same timeframe, sending students to India, the UAE, Rwanda, and Philadelphia.
CFOs share diverse views at CFO Roundtable
| Wharton | San Francisco, in collaboration with Cushman and Wakefield, hosted in October a CFO Roundtable event titled “Positioning for Growth in a New Environment.” CFOs Deepak Ahuja of Tesla Motors, Randy Gottfried of Riverbed Technology, Ken Goldman of Fortinet, and Clyde Hosein of Marvell Technology discussed some of the key challenges in front of every company with a global business model, from the perspective of the Chief Financial Officer. The panelists, who represented companies with fundamentally different businesses, offered unique views on topics such as risk management in a fragile geopolitical environment, supply chain management with global partners, accessibility of capital in the current economy, and achieving growth through acquisitions.

Admissions adds early decision deadline
Admissions season is well under way and the team at Wharton | San Francisco is in full swing, traveling for recruiting purposes throughout the Western U.S. Prospective students for the Class of 2014 have been busy as well, attending information receptions and breakfast sessions, sitting in on classes and conducting their admissions interviews. New to the MBA Program for Executives in San Francisco this year is the addition of an early application deadline (Dec. 1), which will provide incoming students more time between receiving their decision (Jan. 16, 2012) and starting the program (May 20, 2012). Class Updates
- Class 36. The students in Class 36 returned from their International Trip Seminar to Brazil at the beginning of October. The group split its time between Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, conducting visits with companies that included Azul Airlines, Havaianas, HSBC Brazil and Embraer. With the trip behind them, the students are now looking to wrap up Term 5 and embark on Term 6 – followed soon thereafter by the class’ graduation in May 2012.
*A special congratulations is due to Class 36 student Lan Luan, who was awarded a $10,000 scholarship earlier this year from the Financial Women’s Association of San Francisco, which honors Bay Area women who show promise as future financial leaders. Lan was recognized for this accomplishment at a luncheon in October.
- Class 37. The student committees were formed and the votes were cast ... and BRAZIL emerged as the winner for the second year in a row. Class 37 students will head to Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro in September of 2012.

From the Vice Dean
Wharton | San Francisco is on the move — literally. In mid-December, we are beginning the task of shutting down our occupancy of the Folger Coffee Building, our home for the last 10 years. For the more than 700 graduates of our MBA program in San Francisco, this will bring to conclusion the chapter on the first decade of our campus in San Francisco. It has been a remarkable chapter and one that all of us take great pride in — alumni, faculty and staff. Through our campus, we have expanded and reinforced the Wharton brand and renown for education excellence; we have succeeded in the creation of a strategic extension of the global mission of the Wharton School as the preeminent business school in the United States; and we have become the center of campus life for the 9,000 Wharton alumni on the West Coast. The Folger Coffee Building at 101 Howard St. in San Francisco has served us well.

Doug Collom, Vice Dean, Wharton | San Francisco
|
Effective Jan. 2, 2012, we will be up and operational on the top floor of the Hills Brothers Coffee Building, our new location in the South of Market district of San Francisco. In case you haven’t noticed, Wharton | San Francisco is no longer in stealth mode — we have a prominent sign for all to see posted out in front of Hills Plaza along the Embarcadero.
As we turn the page and begin a new chapter in the fulfillment of the original vision of former Dean Patrick Harker, transformative changes for Wharton | San Francisco are in process. A host of Wharton programs and initiatives are taking shape and already spreading roots in the West Coast business community — Executive Education for companies seeking to educate their leaders; Lifelong Learning to provide relevant continuing education to our alumni community; Wharton Entrepreneurial Programs to support the entrepreneurial aspirations of our students and alumni; Wharton Leadership Ventures to provide insight and inspiration to the business community; the Global Consulting Practicum to bring students, companies and faculty from foreign countries together in common bond and purpose; and Leadership for the Business World for rising seniors in high schools with interest in business. All this and much more is taking place at Wharton | San Francisco.
We extend our sincere thanks to everyone who has made this journey so successful, with particular gratitude to those members of our faculty who selflessly fly out from Philadelphia weekend after weekend to teach in our program and provide the foundation of knowledge that distinguishes Wharton. We also acknowledge and acclaim all of the graduates from our MBA program in San Francisco — you are our legacy and our pride.
Come visit us in the New Year! We will host an Open House at the new campus on the evening of Thursday, Feb. 9, 2012, to introduce the entire business community to our new location. We look forward to seeing you!
Doug Collom
